Customization Process for Silicone Tablet Cases
I. Preliminary Requirement Confirmation (Before Prototyping)
1. Product Specification Confirmation
Tablet Model: iPad or Android tablet dimensions; locations of camera cutouts, buttons, and charging ports (providing the actual device, technical drawings, or 3D models is ideal).
Silicone Material Selection: Solid compression-molded silicone (cost-effective) vs. Liquid Silicone Rubber/LSR (smooth, premium feel similar to original iPad cases); requirements for food-grade, FDA, or RoHS certifications.
Thickness & Hardness: Standard Shore A 30–50; wall thickness 1.2–2.5mm (thicker for drop-proof models).
Surface Finish: Matte, glossy, or flocked lining; options for oil coating, screen printing, pad printing, embossed logos, epoxy doming, or color printing.
Structure: Full coverage, partial coverage, stylus slot, kickstand, magnetic attachment slot.
2. Commercial Terms Confirmation
Quantity: Prototype quantity, Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ), lead time.
Pricing: Mold costs, unit price, prototyping fees, shipping, and taxes; mold ownership (customer buyout vs. factory retention).
Packaging: OPP bags, color boxes, neutral packaging, or custom-designed color boxes.
II. Drawing/3D Modeling & Mold Making
1. Client Input: Actual tablet device, 2D engineering drawings, or STEP/IGS 3D files; if no drawings exist, the factory performs 3D reverse engineering via scanning.
2. Structural Review: Verification of cutouts, draft angles, shrinkage rates, and wall thickness to prevent defects like sink marks, air bubbles, or mold sticking; generation of 3D confirmation drawings for client approval.
3. Mold Fabrication:
Compression Molding: Steel molds (CNC machined); single-cavity or multi-cavity molds.
Liquid Silicone (LSR): LSR molds with cold runner systems; higher cost but better mass-production yield.
Mold Lead Time: Typically 7–15 days (depending on complexity; structures with stylus slots or kickstands require longer).
Once the mold is completed, the T1 (First Article) sample is produced.
III. Prototyping Stage
1. T1 Sample Trial: The factory produces initial samples to check the shape, openings, sink marks, and flash.
2. Modifications & Adjustments: Adjustments are made for incorrect structural dimensions, misaligned openings, or tactile feel issues (typically 1–3 rounds of modification; additional rounds incur extra costs).
3. Sample Confirmation: The client verifies appearance, dimensions, fit with the actual device, and LOGO/surface finish; the sample is signed off and sealed as the reference standard for mass production.
Prototyping lead time: 3–7 days.
Common prototyping options: Color proofing (matching Pantone codes) and LOGO process samples.
IV. Mass Production Preparation
1. Raw Material Color Matching: Mixing silicone color masterbatch according to Pantone codes and creating color swatches for approval.
2. Auxiliary Material Preparation: Flocking fabric, magnets, hardware components, ink, and packaging materials.
3. Production Process Scheduling:
Solid Compression Molding: Rubber compounding → cutting → loading into mold → high-temperature vulcanization → demolding → trimming (flash removal).
Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR): Mixing A/B components → high-pressure injection into cold-runner mold → vulcanization.
4. Post-processing:
Trimming: Manual or die-cutting to remove burrs/flash.
Surface Treatment: Spray coating, soft-touch coating, and flocking liner application.
LOGO: Screen printing, pad printing, or integrated embossed LOGO.
Assembly: Embedding magnets, attaching kickstands, and installing pen slot accessories.
5. Quality Inspection: Appearance check, dimensional spot checks, assembly testing, and tensile/abrasion resistance testing.
V. Mass Production & Acceptance/Shipment
1. Mass Production: Scheduled based on orders; standard lead time is 7–20 days (depending on quantity and process complexity).
2. In-process Inspection: Clients may arrange inspections during production (based on AQL standards).
3. Final Inspection: Full visual inspection, packaging, and boxing.
4. Shipment: Logistics arrangement. / Freight forwarder; provision of packing lists and invoices (plus certification documents, if required).
VI. After-Sales Service
Retention of samples; mold warranty coverage for mold-related issues with mass-produced goods (subject to agreed-upon terms).
Negotiation regarding rework or replacement for defective items.
Indicative Timeline
Requirement discussion → 3D modeling & confirmation (1–3 days) → Mold making (7–15 days) → Prototyping & mold modification confirmation (3–7 days) → Mass production (7–20 days).
